FOUR FROM RETRO

Back in 2002, London Records released a 4-disc box-set featuring New Order.

The slight twist on this seemingly never-ending re-issuing and re-packaging of their work was that the discs were divided up into Pop, Fan, Club and Live and individually collated by Miranda Sawyer, John McGready, Mike Pickering and New Order/Bobby Gillespie respectively.

It was very well presented with a 72-page booklet packed with some great photos of the band, a number of which featured their late manager and mentor Rob Gretton, as well as some informative notes. Here's one from each disc and what it says about the song in the booklet:-

From Pop

mp3 : New Order - The Perfect Kiss

Bernard : Perfect Kiss was our follow up to Blue Monday. It was a 72 hour session. We were doing Brotherhood at that time, getting pretty off it in the studio. We had a flat in London and we had to finish Perfect Kiss because we had to tour Australia. We were running out of time, so we worked for 3 days without any sleep.Time started speeding up, all the staff were coming in during the day and it felt like they'd been in there for two hours and then they'd go. We finished it and left the studio in London and drove back to Manchester and then left the next morning for the tour.

Steve : We originally wanted to have Porky Pig saying 'That's all folks!!' at the end of it. But Warner Brothers wanted like a million dollars. So we used the pinball machine instead which doesn't have the same effect.  But It's still one of my favourites

From Fan

mp3 : New Order - Your Silent Face

Hooky : It's fantastic and minimal.  It's done like the old Joy Division stuff: the way the order is done, the chord structures. I remember we got the vocal line off a fucked-up riff that I played at a gig. And Bernard heard it and said, that riff's really good, you played it wrong but it sounds great. We'll use it as the vocal line for Your Silent Face

Bernard : One of my favourites because it's graceful and light. It was written at our rehearsal room and it came about very easily.  It's the hardest type of track to write because it's just a simple beautiful song. It's a nice way to bring people down, to play at the end of an encore.

From Club

mp3 : New Order - World In Motion (Subbuteo mix)

Bernard : The FA heard some music we did for a programme called Best and March and they heard that and liked it and asked us to do the World Cup music.  It's one of our few up songs.  It's quite stirring. Patriotic. It was supposed to stir the players to win. It was interesting seeing the players in the studio. John Barnes was the best rapper. Gazza'a rap was mad, because he's got such a strong Geordie accent.

From Live

mp3 : New Order - Everything's Gone Green (live -1983)

Recorded at the Tolworth Recreation Centre, London : 6th December 1983

Steve : That's the problem with a middling-size band. You either play too small venues and they're really packed, or you play too big venues and the place is half-full. So you have to play gymnasiums.

Hooky : The bloke who put us on, he and his partner were like the forerunners of all the raves, putting gigs on in weird places. They did thses mystery tours, where you paid the money and then got on a coach and it took you to the gig. One was a castle in Southern England, but it pissed down so we couldn't play cos it was open air and they had to send everybody back.

Bernard : I can't remember this gig. But Everything's Gone Green was our first venture into self-production. It was after Ian died, and we were very depressed because of Ian, staying up all night and not seeing daylight.  Martin (Hannett) by that time had seriously hit drugs, he was playing things over and over again. We were all doing each other's heads in. This was probably the first track we used electronic on. I found an old synthesizer with an oscillator and I wanted to sync it up with the drums. After about eight bars it would drop back out of time. Me and Hooky wanted the song to sound like how we played it live.

Hooky : That Tolworth gig was the one where the T-shirt tout guy tried to give u some money, because we didn't have any and he felt so guilty cos he was selling so many bootleg T-shirts. But we threw him out, becuase we were very anti-merchandise, being poncey and anti exploiting your image and all that crap. And then Bernard ran down the road after him going 'Come back, come back!! I'll have it.'

And that's yer lot for the first day of a new month

Kasabian - Goodbye Kiss Lyrics

Goodbye Kiss by Kasabian, Music Lyrics and Video

Goodbye Kiss is third single by British indie rock band, Kasabian, off their fourth album, “Velociraptor!.” The track has been released first as a music video and then as a single.

Regarding the video release, the band have left the following message along on their official website: “Shot in no-nonsense, classic black and white, it captures the band live on stage during their massive gigs at London’s O2″.

Kasabian - Goodbye Kiss LyricsKasabian - Goodbye Kiss Lyrics

Doomed from the start
We met with a goodbye kiss, I broke my wrist
It all kicked off, I had no choice
You said that you didn’t mind ’cause love’s hard to find
Maybe the days we had are gone, living in silence for too long
Open your eyes and what do you see?
No more laughs, no more photographs

Turning slowly, looking back, see
No words, can save this, you’re broken and I’m pissed
Run along like I’m supposed to, be the man I ought to
Rock and Roll, sent us insane, I hope someday that we will meet again
Running wild
Giving it everyone, now that’s all done
Cause we burnt out, that’s what you do
When you have everything, it can’t be true
Maybe the days we had are gone, living in silence for too long
Open you’re eyes and what do you see?
The last stand, let go of my hand

Turning slowly, looking back, see
No words, can save this, you’re broken and I’m pissed
Run along like I’m supposed to, be the man I ought to
Rock and Roll, sent us insane, I hope someday that we will meet again
You go your way and I’ll go my way
No words can save us, this lifestyle made us
Run along like I’m supposed to, be the man I ought to
Rock and Roll, sent us insane, I hope someday that we will meet again

Glee Cast - Cough Syrup Lyrics

Cough Syrup by Glee Cast, Music Lyrics and Video

Cough Syrup is a song performed by Blaine Anderson on the fourteenth episode of the third season of the American musical television series Glee, titled “On My Way” (aired on February 21, 2012).

Blaine sings the solo in the auditorium to Kurt. The performance is intercut with scenes of David Karofsky going through hard times leading up to his attempted suicide.

The original song “Cough Syrup”, by American alternative rock band Young the Giant, was released on 2011 and was included on their eponymous debut album.

Cough Syrup by Glee Cast, Music Lyrics and VideoGlee Cast - Cough Syrup Lyrics

Life’s too short to even care at all oh
I’m losing my mind losing my mind losing control
These fishes in the sea they’re staring at me oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
A wet world aches for a beat of a drum
Oh

If I could find a way to see this straight
I’d run away
To some fortune that I should have found by now
I’m waiting for this cough syrup to come down
Come down

Life’s too short to even care at all oh
I’m coming up now coming up now out of the blue
These zombies in the park they’re looking for my heart
Oh oh oh oh
A dark world aches for a splash of the sun oh oh
(http://musicloversgroups.blogspot.com/2012/02/glee-cast-cough-syrup-lyrics.html)

If I could find a way to see this straight
I’d run away
To some fortune I should have found by now

And so I run out to the things they said could restore me
Restore life the way it should be
I’m waiting for this cough syrup to come down

Life’s too short to even care at all oh
I’m losing my mind losing my mind losing control

(instrumental solo)

If I could find a way to see this straight
I’d run away
To some fortune that I should have found by now

And so I run out to the things they said could restore me
Restore life the way it should be
I’m waiting for this cough syrup to come down

One more spoon of cough syrup now oh
One more spoon of cough syrup now oh

ANOTHER BRILLIANT DUET FEATURING THE BARD OF BARKING

This isn't a single that sits within the collection.  For some reason or other, I never did get round to buying it at the time.  Years later, thanks to their inclusion on compilations and box-sets, I got my hands on the two wonderful b-sides:-

mp3 : Billy Bragg - Wishing The Days Away (ballad version)
mp3 : Billy Bragg - Sin City

The former is a stripped back version of one of the tracks on Talking With The Taxman About Poetry....this version is just Billy on vocals and Cara Tivey on keyboards.

The latter is a track, that until I got Volume 1 of Billy's boxsets back in 2006, was one that I knew was a cover version....but it was one I thought was called 'The Lord's Burnin' Rain' and that it had originally been penned by Hank Wangford.  This was all down to me having this bit of footage on VHS tape courtesy of some late night programme on Channel 4:-

It was only decades later that I learned both men were paying tribute to Gram Parsons.

Incidentally, one of the many gigs I never got to but wished I'd seen was at Glasgow University back in 1984. Billy was headlining and the support was the Hank Wangford Band. There was a bomb scare phoned into the venue...but Billy being the ultimate pro followed hs audience out into the street and played an impromptu set on the steps...Click here for more details.

Happy Listening

PS : It's just struck me....and it is pure coincidence......that on the extra day in the leap year I've featured a song from a single with the word leap in it.

Hawkwind - 1974 - Hall of the Mountain Grill

Quality: 4.25 out of 5
Trip-O-Meter: 4.5 out of 5

Hawkwind's interstellar jets are in hyperspace on this LP, the band fresh off of its filling rattling success of the live "Space Ritual" (although I've never quite been able to get into that one since the bass seems out of tune through much of it - otherwise, it is quite groovy). David Brock continues to democratize the band with the other members contributing some fine, spaced-out ditties. The band leader riding shotgun didn't work out that well for Belle and Sebastian, and it definitely didn't work for Oasis, but Hawkwind ends up all the better for it. The sound is a little brighter and more psychedelic than the last album, which is also a big plus. Additionally, the electronics fit in much better now, instead of sometimes blaring at odds with the music.

The band comes out very consistent here, and all of the tracks have their high points. Of course, the classic Hawkwind sound is in full bloom in Brock's "The Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear In Smoke)" and the hard-hitting, live "You Better Believe It." Here you get all of the pounding rhythms, acid guitar, floating mellotron, and stoned vocals you need in a potent brew. Nik Turner's "D-Rider" gives us a slightly different flavor of the Hawkwind spirit, while the title track and "Goat Willow" are fun sound paintings in minature. Of course, I've got a soft spot for Lemmy (even if it was HIS bass out of tune on "Space Ritual"), so "Poor Johnny" is notable for giving us some psychedelia in the groove while Lemmy warbles as if almost passed out on the floor, whiskey bottle in hand. The bonus tracks are live cuts from the same show as "You'd Better Believe It," and for my money this leaves us with a (give or take) 23 minutes live set that's superior to "Space Ritual." There's also a single version of "The Psychedelic Warlords," although it's not particularly essential.

This is a great snapshot of the band in its mid 70's, freaky, hairy prime. I'd tell you that it's their best, but the next studio album is even better. We'll get to that one soon.

A THING OF BEAUTY

In which Billy Bragg, Wilco, Natalie Merchant and Eliza Carthy combine to make something truly wonderful....with the help of Woody Guthrie:-

mp3 : Billy Bragg & Wilco - Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key

In case anyone isn't familiar with the story. Mermaid Avenue is a 1998 album of previously unheard lyrics written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie, put to music written and performed by Billy Bragg and the Wilco. The project was organized by Woody's daughter, Nora Guthrie. The LP was released in 1998 and a second volume of recordings, Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, followed in 2000. The projects are named after a song "Mermaid's Avenue" written by Woody. This was also the street in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York on which he lived.

It had been during the spring of 1995, that  Nora contacted Billy about writing music for a selection of completed lyrics. Her father had left behind over a thousand sets of complete lyrics written between 1939 and 1967; none of which had any music other than a vague stylistic notation.

Nora Guthrie's liner notes in Mermaid Avenue indicate that it was her intention that the songs be given to a new generation of musicians who would be able to make the songs relevant to a younger generation. Billy in turn approached Wilco and asked them to participate in the project as well. Wilco agreed, and in addition to recording with Billy in Ireland, they were given their own share of songs to finish.

Rather than recreating tunes in Woody Guthrie's style, Billy and Wilco created new, contemporary music for the lyrics. What seemed like a risky enterprise surprised everyone; released in 1998 as Mermaid Avenue, the results were met with near universal acclaim.

Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key, is for many, the highlight of the two volumes of work the project realised. The full list of musicians are:-

Jay Bennett - Hammond B3, bouzuki
Billy Bragg - acoustic guitar, lead vocal
Eliza Carthy - violin
Ken Coomer - drums and percussion
Natalie Merchant - backing vocal
Elizabeth Steen - accordian
John Stirratt - electric bass
Peter Yanowitz - chorus drums

Here's the two otherwise unavailable tracks on the CD single:-

mp3 : Billy Bragg & Wilco - My Thirty Thousand
mp3 : Billy Bragg & Wilco - Bugeye Jim

Happy Listening.
