Back in the fall of 1996, I got Robbie Fulks’ very first cd (Country Love Songs) at the radio station. I think there had been a bunch of mediocre releases that summer because I remember looking at the case and insert and figgerin’ this was probably some derivative alt-country. But being the dutiful dj, I brought it home and listened. I was immediately impressed by the first song – a cover of Tim Carroll’s “Every Kind of Music But Country” – and about halfway through the next song “Rock Bottom, Pop 1”, I knew I had seriously underestimated the man.
